Personal Statement (Edited)
My love for medicine, science, and space has been as ancient as my very self.
With these insightful words, and this wonderful quote by famed inspirational author David Hawkins, I am inspired and compelled to live in compassionate service. I quote this genius; "Make a gift of your life and lift all mankind by being kind, considerate, forgiving, and compassionate at all times, in all places, and under all conditions, with everyone as well as yourself. This is the greatest gift anyone can give"
I awoke in the operating room at XXXXXXX Hospital in XXXXXXXX. I was staring into the bright lights of the operating theater, disheveled and weak. There were strange voices discussing distant events while standing over me, asking irrelevant questions that I could not understand. Bright lights shining into my eyes added to my confusion and my attempt to regain my understanding of what was going on.
I continually asked myself where I was, why were these bright lights shining into my eyes? The last thing I remembered was running down the hallway, tripping and lunging forward headfirst, and I then I blacked out. I was only six years old and very little made sense at the time. I was fascinated with the operating room lights, and the grogginess and confused delightfulness of my new environment. Much later, I asked my parents what had happened. Why were there did I see so many lights and strange people and muddled voices? The whole accounting of my situation was replayed in my mind me and had permanently remained in my subconscious. The bright lights, strange voices, grogginess, confusion, impressed me greatly after awakening. I couldn't believe that my life had just been saved.
As a child in my native country of XXXXXX, living in a tiny village of XXXXX near XXXXXXX, we would gather and burn a fire at night, listening intently to fairy tales of the living dead from the elders of the village, imagining things and gazing into the night skies wondering what was beyond. These same sky lights reminded me in my later years of my stint in the operating theatre of XXX Orthopedic Hospital as I was waking up from anesthesia. These experiences awakened my fantasies about astronomy, science, and medicine. The bright night stars, like those of the operating room, stirred up these same emotions and memories in my later life.
I went off to the USSR in my continued quest to acquire the knowledge needed to become the person that I wanted to be. To become a healthcare professional or a experienced physician, I hadn't yet met the minimum qualifications needed to secure my scholarship to study medicine in the USSR, but I did not hesitate in my effort to accomplish same. I returned to Nigeria from Russia after eight years of and that culminated in my MD degree and foundation of modern medicine.
I went through a hospital clerkship internship training for Internal Medicine and Surgery at the XXXXXXX Hospital of XXXXXX. XXXXXXX Hospital was for Pediatrics and Island Maternity Women’s Hospital for Obstetrics and Gynecology. Internship was awesome, and it further intensified my desire to reach my ultimate goal. Unfortunately, the conditions of healthcare delivery in a developing nation like my native country was grossly inadequate. After several years of practice with rudimentary equipment, I decided it was time to discover what real scientific innovation and medicine was all about. I arrived in the United States hoping to accomplish my new goal. I wanted to refine my knowledge to fully develop within myself an even better modern-day healthcare professional, with an outstanding world view of medicine. I have chosen your hospital to perfect my passion and knowledge as a professional. I believe your program will give me the necessary tools to succeed in my chosen specialty of Internal Medicine.
I believe your facility possesses the resources and knowledge to teach aspiring professionals, while guiding them to their ultimate destination of becoming fully qualified medical professionals.
