Dear fellow graduates, distinguished faculty, honored guests, friends and family, good evening and welcome. This important evening marks the culmination of a long period of courage, commitment, and accomplishment for all of us in this graduating class. It is also important as a point of reflection for those aspiring to these goals and others, and for those who have achieved them cumulatively to some degree already. For this reason, it is my privilege to address you on behalf of the graduates of the RN to BSN program and I hope that my words, in some meaningful way, will give a measure of honor and justice to the significant events that have brought all of us all here tonight.
Nursing is said to be a kaleidoscope of opportunities. Opportunities to serve human- kind, be instrumental in alleviating pain and suffering, and having the pleasure of learning from others who so keenly and faithfully apply their craft for the sake of these causes and services. The BSN graduates have achieved the competence and leadership abilities that are so important for this life of service through scholarships and various resources that the RN to BSN graduates have obtained from previous and current education, but also having the experience to tie this in with all the opportunities that nursing offers. Many of the MSN graduates have been active as practicing RNs but are stepping into advanced opportunities that are available for RNs with BSNs.
RN to BSN students are known as a unique and interesting and generally more diverse in terms of age, gender, marital status, and most students have had previous and continue to hold nursing careers. Along with diversities and challenges, I can say that many of us have balanced full-time employment and full or part-time school enrollment while attempting to maintain a healthy personal life.
Albert Schweitzer once said:
“I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.”
